(from the SLCC prompt: write a poem about the weather outside right now.)

First spring sunlight shines

everywhere

like a Kodak flash—

even under eaves

and leaves and my eyelids—

suddenly stark and clean.

Its brightness fills the world

after the long dark

and cloudy winter

where the white of heaven’s ceiling

flakes off paint chips

and falls

day after day.

Winter’s icepick

still hides in each gust of wind

but spring brightness

has arrived.
